El et moi

El — God.
et moi — and me.

I have loved Him in the waiting,
When no other eyes could see,
In the quiet of the midnight—
Only El and only me.

I have trimmed my lamp with longing,
Kept the oil beside the flame,
Listening through the deepening darkness
For the whisper of His name.

But I am not the only watcher;
There are lamps across the night,
Countless hearts that bear His promise,
Clothed and waiting in His light.

She is scattered among nations,
Yet His Spirit makes her one—
Every tongue and tribe together,
Waiting for the coming Son.

Soon the midnight cry will thunder,
And the sleeping world will see:
The Bridegroom comes to claim His beloved,
Dressed in immortality.

No more longing, no more waiting,
No more distance, He and I—
El et moi, my Love forever,
My Beloved, me His Bride.
